Twitter requires lots of time, lots of energy and at great expense. What is the value of that time? On Twitter the value is measured in followers, and more specifically in the percent of clicks you get to a post. What would happen if you had a Twitter problem that affected that?
One of the big problems with Twitter is that you don't have control. Unlike an e-mail marketing list, your list of followers on Twitter could disappear at any moment. Twitter problems occur all the time- and there's nothing you can do about it. While Twitter tries hard to keep their model rolling smoothly, how long can an unprofitable company maintain?
What would happen to your position as Social Marketing Director if your Twitter followers disappear. How do you account for the months of time that you spent creating the following? What if you can't log-in for the days preceding a big event?
Putting all your eggs in someone else's basket isn't the smartest thing unless you have a strategy in place. If everyone abandoned Twitter for a new service, how do you move people? It's not like you can reach them if they're still followers but they don't log-in. Especially if you don't really have a strong e-mail marketing campaign. What happens to your business when there's no one clicking your links?
TwitterGlitch.com is a website that has thoroughly researched how to recover from Twitter problems. How can you tweet when you can't log in? How can you find blueprints of your followers in the event your account dies? How can you create a second, back-up account in the event your account dies or gets hacked?
Twitter takes time to cultivate a following. It takes time to build trust and relationships. It takes time to ultimately make consistent sales. But what if that time was snubbed out today? What would your ROI be year-to-date if you made all the sales you were going to make on Twitter? Would you be happy?
And don't forget about some of the perils that come with hackers. Imagine porn links coming from your Twitter account? And then how many of you have your Twitter feed showing on Facebook, your blog, Linkedin and elsewhere? A Twitter Glitch could be far reaching.
