Social bookmarking software, by my definition, is any software designed to get your sites more social bookmarks. Using software to increase the number of social bookmarks is an effective method of creating backlinks. But it can also cause you problems, such as losing your bookmark accounts, or worse, getting your site de-listed by the search engines.

The best way to get bookmarks is the old fashioned way, by real people bookmarking your site because they like it. But too many people don't make it easy for them by installing bookmarking "share this" tools. It's easy to do, it's free, and it's the very best type of bookmark. Review all of your websites and blogs to be sure sharing tools are available to make it easy for people to bookmark your pages.

The second best type of bookmarking method is your own personal bookmarking. You should have your own accounts open, and use social bookmark services to bookmark everything you like. Don't be totally self serving, as the bookmark services don't like that, but bookmark everything you like, along with your own stuff, and you'll get some easy backlinks just from doing this.

The next level of social bookmarking software is what I would call commercial solutions. Of these two types, I prefer a service that involves a large community of other real people, who have some incentive to go and bookmark each others stuff.

Of the two methods, I highly recommend the latter, as it's safe, easy, and much less risky than the other method. Again, when it comes to social bookmarking, nothing competes with natural, the more real people you can get bookmarking your pages the better.

So my recommendations are to install sharing options on all your sites and blog posts, develop the habit of bookmarking everything personally, and find a service in which real people bookmark your stuff, and you bookmark theirs. These methods are safe, effective, and will get great results over time.
