A flower girl is a very important addition to any one's wedding. It is also a great way to show a little girl in your life how important she is to you. The flower girl follows behind the bridesmaids and either before or after the maid of honor. She scatters flower petals along the aisle as she walks to prepare the path and the guests for the bride's arrival. One of the parts of planning a wedding brides can enjoy the most is looking for a flower girl dress and picking out the perfect one for her special girl. But, how do you prepare her and find that precious dress she'll wear?
A flower girl is usually as young as 3 years old and can be as old as 8. She can come from the family of a close friend or she can be a member of your own family, like a niece or a cousin. Whomever you chose, she is sure to be adorable and will easily put a smile on the faces of those who attend the ceremony. Even though they are cute, small children are likely to act up at some point. The bride can prepare for this in advance by sitting down with the little one and going through the role of a flower girl, maybe with the help of a fun picture book about this part of the ceremony.
It is important that the bride designates someone to watch over the flower girl during the ceremony. The little one might need someone to hold her hand. Also, seat her parents in an easily accessible place where she can see them. Then allow her to sit with her parents for the durations of the ceremony so she doesn't create too much of a distraction after her moment comes to an end. It is very important that someone makes sure she uses the bathroom before the ceremony! Most importantly, a bride should never get too nervous about the flower girl making a mistake. In fact, she should expect her to. Don't worry about it too much. If she gets shy, maybe cries a little, or runs instead of walks, the guests will think it is cute.
If you have a special young girl in your life that you've had in mind, who might be just a little too old to be a flower girl, just find another position for her. She can be a junior bridesmaid or a reader. There is nothing written in stone that says you even have to have a flower girl at all if you prefer. However, the flower girl does make a nice addition in your wedding photos. It is also a cute part of the wedding when the little one is announced by the D.J. at the reception. How cute would it be for her to take part in the first dance? The wedding ceremony and reception afterward can prove to be a long day for any little one. Don't be offended if her parents take her home early. Also, think about proving a babysitting service for guests with young ones. This will be a great way for the kids to play and for the adults to be able to enjoy themselves.
It can be fun to pick the flower girl's dress. Usually the bride will pick a small version of her dress for the flower girl. Or the bride can pick a simple white dress with a sash that will match her wedding colors. Some brides even pick a smaller version of the bridesmaid dress for the little one. Dressing the flower girl in white is probably the most popular idea. White symbolizes purity and sweetness. Whatever dress you choose just make sure it is an age appropriate version and not necessarily an exact match of what the adult ladies are wearing. The dress should be comfortable and of course not too long with some simple age appropriate jewelry to compliment it. No matter what look you pick for the little one, she is sure to be a big hit. Having a flower girl at your wedding can add to the fun. It will make a day for her remember and cherish almost as much as you do!
