The MLM, or network marketing, industry was shaken up by the advent of the Internet. The past decade has been one of transition, witnessing many old school MLM members being completely resistant to changing their ways of conducting business. They are often resentful of the new breed of top network marketing members, who center their business around the Internet.

Many older MLM members have taken the attitude that you can't teach on old dog new tricks. As a result, many of them have left the business, or at least, quit actively building their business. Some of them have organizations large enough to continue to bring in monthly residual income, whether they actually work, or not.

That is the power of network marketing. You can work for years building your downline so that if something happens later, and you can no longer work, or you simply choose not to work at it actively, you've still got money coming in, that you can count on. It is a very powerful position to be in.

To their credit, many MLM members who established their businesses in the previous century, have made the transition quite well, blending internet marketing with network marketing. Of course, newcomers to the industry, may never really appreciate how things were done, before the web was created.

Referrals and the process of duplication is the way one becomes successful in network marketing. You join a company that has a product you agree to buy a certain amount of each month. After that, your business is simply getting other people to join you and make that same agreement. Everybody your personally enroll is placed on the first level in your downline. You make money from every purchase they make.

Here is the reason that multi-level marketing is incredibly powerful. Your ability to generate income does not stop there. When your first level referrals recruit their first level (which is your second level), and when your second level recruits your third level, you continue to make money. Each company is different, but generally, you'll make money from five to ten levels deep.

This is the duplication process. Done well, over time, can bring about wealth and fiscal freedom. It involves more than being a good recruiter. You must be able to teach your referrals how to refer others successfully, and how to teach their referrals to do the same. At each level, the duplication process needs to continue to work its way down.

Back in the day, the method for getting your referrals was that you asked everybody you know and everybody you get introduced to, if they would like to join your business and make a lot of money with you. You had an actual script that you would memorize and you would know what to say, based on any number of possible answers that they might have. You were trained to be pushy and to keep the conversation going even when they would tell you they are not interested.

In other words, it was their job to transform their personalities into that of a full time, door to door salesmen to all their friends and family members, work or class mates, etc. They were even expected to live by the "3 Feet Rule". If someone came within three feet of them, then they were required to engage them with that scripted conversation.

The new breed of top network marketing professionals often shudder when they hear those stories. They say they are thankful that the internet allows them to target people who are actively seeking to get involved in a business opportunity like theirs. In fact, due to the power of search engines, they set up systems so that qualified prospects contact them, asking for more information about what they have to offer.
