Start in Google with the main keyword and do a little research on the topic to see what people are talking about. Type the word into Google, and wait a second. Several long-tail versions will show up.

 

 

Transfer these keywords one at a time into the Google Keyword Tool. Doing an Exact search will give you a rough estimate of the amount of traffic for the keyword per month. Get rid of all of your keywords that you're not interested in.

 

 

Put each one of your keyword terms into Google, and see who is ranking for those keyword terms. If they are sites you feel confident that you can outrank, keep those keywords. You will have the capacity to make money fast with these keywords. Conversely, if the keyword terms that have too much competition, they usually are not worth the effort for small niche sites.
